The Poulsbo Historical Society was established in 1991 by a small group of long-time residents who were concerned about keeping the history and artifacts of early Poulsbo within the community. Early meetings centered around “chat” sessions where stories were told and recorded. Artifacts soon followed, and, without a building or museum, were stored in the basements and barns of members.
After 30 years, we are proud to claim four museum venues (Poulsbo Heritage Museum, Poulsbo Maritime Museum, Martinson Cabin, Archive and Resource Center) with two libraries, a boat yard, an active education/outreach program offering monthly speakers’ programs, research facilities in both the Maritime and Heritage museums, an informal genealogy group, educational activities for children on a monthly basis, and guided walking tours.
Poulsbo Historical Society relies heavily on volunteer help for all aspects of our organization and new volunteers are vital to our continued success. As of 2025, we have part-time employees fulfilling the roles of education/outreach director, business manager, and gift shop coordinator. We have a full-time executive director, and are overseen by a board of directors. All other aspects of the organization are run by volunteers.
